Así Que Pasen Cinco Años is an original operatic adaptation of the
Federico Garcia Lorca play of the same title and will be performed
bilingually, against a dynamic backdrop of motion, color and sound. The
piece incorporates elements of archetype and reality, representing the
non-linear passage of time and the complexity of human emotion. The story
line follows the internal journey of a young man, unsure of what he wants as
he loses his fiancé; loses his way; and encounters figures of his own
imagination, both evil and benign. While this play was never performed in
Lorca's lifetime, it represents a rite of passage for the playwright, and
his belief that, "We must either change the theatre completely or it will
die forever."
Lorca's fatal shooting on August 19, 1936--five years to the day from
the completion of Así Que Pasen Cinco Años--was a tragic example of the
repression existent in Spanish Society during the tumultuous
era surrounding the Civil War. Persecuted for being both homosexual and politically
outspoken, Lorca was able to fashion the inner and outer turmoil he suffered
into some of the most complex theatrical, visual and poetic expression of
our time.
Denise Fraga plays the MANIQUI DEL TRAJE De NOVIA
in the upcoming opera Asi Que Pasen Cinco Años by Garcia Lorca.
Así Que Pasen Cinco Años is an example of Lorca's "impossible theatre"
or "theatre beneath the sand". This production will feature music composed
by Thomas S. Dean and David Barrows, that combines classical opera with
elements of jazz and traditional Spanish melodies. Set designer Helen
Oliveta-Petersen brings her visual arts experience into the theatre,
complimented by the lighting design of Jared Hirsch, puppetry of M. Sam
Bower, and video design of Ethan Hoerneman.
The instrumentation is written for piano, cello, string and electric
bass, alto sax, clarinet and bass clarinet, classical guitar, and
percussion. The musical ensemble will feature some of the brightest young
musicians in the Bay Area, whose classical training is balanced by a
diversity of influences that match the depth and complexity of the score.
